The third edition of the Cahier de Recherche series of LEAP Notebooks takes as its subject didacticism in architecture, public art, and the urban realm. The didactic potential of architecture and art has a long history of exploration, and debate. This multifaceted, often contentious potential immediately summons language to the foreground.<\/p>\n

The built environment is full of didactic designed objects, which range from highly legible forms to those that are less explicit, more mysterious, even contradictory. A work of art that aims to communicate clearly and directly can be criticized for being too literal, or \u2013 a more damning judgement – is recategorized as propaganda. A work that is not at all legible may too be criticized for isolating the viewer. This range echoes the spectrum between didacticism, in which something is pointed out with the intent to convince, and dialecticism, in which the possibility of more than one point of view is embraced.<\/p>\n

What is art and architecture\u2019s power to \u201cspeak\u201d within the public realm? And how might this power influence social, cultural, political, ecological, educational, and economic issues? Should didacticism always be received with suspicion, as motivated, or dismissed as utopian?
